Titus Matiyane (b. 1964) is a self-taught South African artist best known for vast panoramic drawings and paintings depicting cities, regions and landscapes from imagined aerial perspectives. Raised in Atteridgeville near Pretoria, he taught himself the principles of perspective through close, repeated observation of township streets, roads and buildings, gradually developing a method that allowed him to construct large-scale overhead maps and panoramas without using aerial photography or technical drawing instruments. The resulting images are remarkable achievements of visual memory, spatial intelligence and sustained labour.
Matiyane’s panoramas combine architecture, roads, landmarks, topography and infrastructure into densely detailed visual fields that function simultaneously as maps, portraits of particular places and meditations on the relationship between the individual and the urban environment. He has depicted Pretoria, Johannesburg, Soweto, Maputo, Dar es Salaam and various other cities and regions, approaching each with the same meticulous observation and imaginative construction.
Although his style may appear direct and naïve at first encounter, the compositional ambition and spatial intelligence of his works are extraordinary; the accumulated density of information in his largest works rewards sustained looking.
Matiyane has been included in major exhibitions in South Africa and internationally, and his work has attracted critical attention for the way it challenges assumptions about formal training, technical knowledge and artistic legitimacy.
His panoramas offer a distinctive way of picturing urban expansion, civic belonging and post-apartheid South African space that is unmistakably his own. He is widely regarded as one of the most original and compelling self-taught artists working in the region.
